Welcome to Knox College! I'm here to tell you about the human-powered Knox experience. There are 1,400 students at Knox, from nearly every state and 51 countries. People come here and discover something new about themselves and about the world. Knox has even been recognized as one of the 40 College That Changes Lives. A Knox education isn't something you sit and watch; it's something you go out and do. We apply what we learn to the "real world" -- through internships, research projects, study abroad, community service, and other immersive experiences. You'll spend a lot of time in Alumni Hall, even before you graduate. It's where students get real-world experience beyond the classroom through internships, research, study abroad and community service. In fact every student will receive a $2,000 Power of Experience grant to support those real world experiences. About half of our students study abroad; the global studies center offers more than 100 programs in 54 countries around the world. Finally, the career center prepares us for life after Knox. Ten years out, more than 80% of alumni report they're doing meaningful work.

Old Main

At Knox, it feels like you're surrounded by history, and Old Main is a great example of that. It was the site of the fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858. Unsurprisingly, given that Knox was founded by abolitionists, we're big fans of our sixteenth President. Knox has enrolled women and students of color from the beginning; living and learning in a diverse community, alongside people whose ideas might be quite different from your own, has always been part of a Knox education. But Old Main isn't a museum. We have classes in here. Visiting scholars drop in to meet with students. Our president's office is here; stop by and chat!

George Davis Hall

We're at George Davis Hall, which is as good a place as any to talk about our academic calendar. We have three 10-week terms, and take just three courses per term. (These are really intensive terms--because you'll cover an entire semester of work in just 10 weeks!) Classes are small—14 students on average—which means you and your professors get to know each other personally. They are genuinely interested in who you are, in your opinions and experiences, and in what you want to do with your life. And not only will you learn collaboratively alongside your professors—but some of them will likely become lifelong friends!

HOPE Center

Whatever your race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability status or gender, you're welcome at the House of Peace and Equity, also known as the HOPE Center. The Offices of Intercultural Life and Spiritual Life are both housed here in the center, which celebrates the diversity within our community. The center features open, flexible spaces that students and other members of the Knox community can use in a variety of ways, such as for worship, prayer, meditation, and reflection. Students also use the center as a study space and for club meetings, programs, and socializing. Dedicating such a beautiful, large space to these efforts reinforces that equity and justice have deep roots in our mission and history.

Whitcomb Art Center

Every student here takes at least one class in the arts; whether it's art, creative writing, dance, theatre or music. That's the beauty of a Knox education -- you explore across disciplines, blaze new trails, and make new connections. The new Whitcomb Art Center provides a home for our studio art and art history programs. The art center includes dedicated studios for painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, metalworking and woodworking, and multimedia art -- plus individual studios for seniors working on capstone creative projects. It's design is consistent with the college's ongoing commitment to sustainability -- energy-efficient and full of natural light.

The Ford Center for the Fine Arts is home to our performing arts—theatre, dance, and music—and features Harbach theatre, a 600-seat theatre with a 360-degree rotating stage, and Kresge Recital Hall. It's where you'll find a Knox-only experience—Repertory Theatre Term—one of our immersive programs. With Rep Term, all of your classes are focused on researching, designing, producing, and performing two full-length productions. It's the only one of its kind in the country—and a great example of a real-world, human-powered experience. And then there's the annual Rootabaga Jazz Fest, Terpsichore Dance Collective, jazz bands and choirs—and so much more.

Athletics are an important part of the Knox experience -- nearly 60% of our students participate in varsity, club, or intramural sports. We have 20 NCAA Division III teams competing in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Everyone on campus is welcome at the Andrew Fitness Center. It has state-of-the-art equipment -- cardio and selectorized machines, a free weights system -- studios for dance aerobics and yoga, and a fantastic view of campus. It's connected to Memorial Gymnasium, where we cheer on the basketball and volleyball teams -- it's loud, crowded, and proud -- and Fleming Fieldhouse, housing our indoor track, batting cages for softball and baseball, and a new golf performance center.

We're serious about our athletic competition. We've got some great athletic traditions, like the annual Battle for the Bronze Turkey football game. This majestic bird—yes, it's a bronze, turkey-shaped trophy—has been passed back and forth between Knox and our archrival Monmouth College since 1888. It's a rivalry that's older than Army/Navy or Michigan versus Ohio State—and let's just say that there have been some shenanigans along the way. When we host the game, it's held here in the Knosher Bowl. There's no better place to enjoy a football game on a crisp Saturday.

Welcome to the South Lawn. On the first day of fall term, it's the site of Pumphandle -- students, professors, and staff join a line to shake everyone's hand and say hello. It's also where we celebrate one of my favorite traditions, Flunk Day, a secret day each spring when classes are canceled for a surprise carnival. In between, it hosts everything from bands to comedians to student protests. And don't forget about student clubs and organizations -- there's more than 100! If you're into something, chances are there's a club for it. If not, you can start your own. Shout-out to our newest club for student beekeepers!

Knox is a residential college -- more than 90% of us live on campus all four years. That's because living together with a bunch of people with different backgrounds, different interests, and different ways of communicating is a big part of our education. Most first-year students live in suites -- kind of like super-sized apartments. Here in Post Hall, you'll share a suite with about a dozen other students -- a dozen new friends as soon as you get here. But how many apartment buildings have a convenience store inside? At the Out Post in Post Hall, you can satisfy your late night Pop Tart cravings without leaving campus.

If you're interested in a career in science or you just want to know how the world works, the Umbeck Science and Math Center is an excellent place to start. Knox is the 11th largest producer of future math and science Ph.D.s in the country. Nearly 80% of our students applying to med school are accepted. One of the great things about Knox is that students do meaningful scientific research, from exploring dreams in the dream lab to synthesizing novel new compounds. Our new observatory supports our minor in astronomy and features a spectrograph that analyzes light from celestial objects and a solar telescope. The science center will look a lot different when you get here though. We are in the middle of a 14 million dollar renovation.

Sustainability is an important part of the Knox culture. We recycle. We have a bike share program. And we even grow our own food. Here at the Knox Farm, we grow fruits and veggies that are served in our dining halls and donated to local food banks. Tiny but mighty, the farm covers an acre of gardens and greenhouses. We produce more than a ton of food each season. It's nourished with campus-generated compost and grown organically without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. And, in the summer, it's all about tomatoes. The kitchen staff cooks them down into sauce, which is preserved and served during fall term. And it's all delicious!

Knox isn't just a great place to learn, it's a great place to live. After your first year, you'll have lots of different housing options -- like here in Hamblin Hall. These aren't your typical dorm rooms -- they're two- and four-person apartment-style residences with living rooms, kitchens, and private bathrooms. You'll find lots of housing options at Knox -- from places like Hamblin to suite-style residence halls, townhouses, Greek houses, and numerous cultural centers and theme houses, like the International House, Casa Latina, and Peterson House. But where you live is only the beginning. There are new people to meet, traditions to explore, and places you will remember for the rest of your life.

Seymour Library has more than 350,000 volumes, including Special Collections and Archives, with primary source materials of interest to students, faculty, and researchers from around the world. Seymour also has dedicated offices for students completing year-long independent research and creative projects through our nationally recognized Honors Program. Students who successfully complete and defend their Honors project graduate with College Honors. Some recent topics of those projects: "Political Economy of the Mexican Drug War." "How the Gender Makeup of a Team Affects Teammates of Each Gender." And "The Definition of Evil and its Portrayal on the Stage."

Seymour Union is the epicenter of campus. It's home to dining halls, hang out spots, the games room, and the Gizmo—a snack bar where you'll find the chaos, the calm, and the deep-fried. A fun tradition: Midnight Breakfast. Faculty and staff serve, you guessed it, breakfast to students staying up late during finals. Seymour is also home to Student Senate. They're not the party planners, they actually govern. The impact of their work is everywhere, from our Honor Code to campus-wide recycling to the Knox Farm. The party planners are here too. The Union Board organizes campus events from concerts and comedians to game nights. In the games room you can shoot pool, play videogames on big-screen TVs, or just hang out between classes. You'll make a lot of friends and have a lot of fun. Most of all, you'll feel like you belong.

Don't let the name fool you, there's not much "lounging" going on in here. Taylor Student Lounge and Game Room is where you can shoot pool, play videogames on big-screen TVs, or just hang out between classes. There's a stage and sound system; perfect for a Karaoke sing-off. The game room has pool tables, ping pong, air hockey, and foosball. You'll also find a craft room. No matter what your interests, there are plenty of places to be and things to do at Knox. You'll make a lot of friends and have a lot of fun. Most of all, you'll feel like you belong.

Knox graduates do work that matters. Our alumni run Fortune 500 companies and grassroots nonprofits. They become scientists and professors, doctors and lawyers, animators and dancers. We're a top producer of Fulbright Fellows and Peace Corps volunteers, and we're among the top 4% of colleges whose alumni earn Ph.D.s. And we're on all the right lists; from Washington Monthly's "Best Bang for the Buck" to Forbes "Grateful Grads Index." Knox will not only change your life—it will prepare you to go out and change the world.

This is Green Oaks: 700 acres of lakes and streams, restored tallgrass prairie, and old-growth oaks -- just twenty minutes from campus. It's a great place for hiking, fishing, camping, or canoeing. It's also a place for learning, from student research projects to the immersive Green Oaks Term -- where students live in a converted horse barn for ten weeks and study the arts, anthropology, and the environment. It's the site of another Knox tradition, the Prairie Burn, a controlled fire set by professors and students each spring to protect native plants from invasive species. Our school nickname, the Prairie Fire, was sparked here. This place is beautiful.

One of the best things about Knox is that we're right here, in the middle of downtown Galesburg. It's a quintessential, Midwestern city that runs on collective ingenuity -- for example, a Knox alum helped turn Seminary Street into an independent shopping district, with a natural foods store, a bakery, a theatre, and an antique mall. People make art here -- theatre, music, sculpture. And people make a difference here. Knox students contribute thousands of hours of service -- often through KnoxCorps, which is like Galesburg's own Peace Corps. Plus, there's eight pizza places and two great coffee shops in a city of 33,000. What more do you need?

So what does Knox feel like? It feels busy but not chaotic, productive but not exclusively goal-oriented, philosophical but not pretentious, and friendly but not shallow. It feels like a place where good people do great work and don't make a huge deal about it, because there is more great work to be done. A Knox education isn't something you sit and watch -- it's something you go out and do. At Knox, we're a people-powered -- a human-powered -- experience.
