Music Building

Built in the early 1930s, the Music Building is one of the campus's four original neo-gothic buildings, and a defining feature of the Lehman campus. It has a 150-seat Recital Hall, individual practice rooms, and large rehearsal spaces for Lehman's bands, orchestra, and musical ensembles. That's one thing about Lehman College—you won't have to go far for great music. More than 100 jazz, pop, and classical concerts are performed on campus every academic year. For you history buffs, the Music Building also contains an important connection to our past: A stained-glass window marks the contribution of the WAVES, or Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, a WWII-era reserve force of women volunteers who trained on campus in the early 1940s.

Speech and Theater Building

Home to the College's Theatre and Dance programs, the Speech and Theatre Building includes two performance spaces as well as costume and set workshops. The 500-seat Lovinger Theatre and the black box Experimental Theater host both student and community presentations: music ensembles, dance recitals, multimedia works, and theater ranging from Shakespeare’s plays to original pieces. The building also houses the Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences department and the Speech and Hearing Center, where faculty and students provide expert diagnosis and therapy to community members.

APEX (Athletics and Recreation)

If you’re interested in athletics and fitness, head over to the APEX, Lehman's 165,000-square foot sports center. Designed by acclaimed architect Rafael Viñoly, its two gyms, dance and ballet rooms, four racquetball courts, indoor track, two basketball courts, and fitness center are available free of charge to students. Its claim to fame is its Olympic-size swimming pool—the only one in the region—where actual Olympians, Jenny Thompson and Cristina Teuscher, once trained. If you're hoping to become the next Raphael Nadal or Serena Williams, practice your swing on the tennis courts outside.

Science Hall

Science Hall is a $70 million LEED Platinum certified teaching and research facility, where Lehman students—guided by our world-class faculty—gain meaningful research experience using the latest techniques and equipment. Lehman’s natural and social science students frequently present at conferences, collaborate with researchers at other institutions, and publish their work in respected journals. In the building's labs, students train in everything from molecular biochemistry to neuroscience to nanotechnology. In the rooftop greenhouse, faculty and students cultivate research material for our nationally renowned plant sciences program, a 50-year partnership with the New York Botanical Garden. Lehman College is training a new generation of scientists who want to change the world, and you can be one of them.

Gillet Hall

Our earth, health, and social science programs are housed in another of the College's original buildings, Gillet Hall. Gillet's facilities include one of two Geographical Information Science labs at CUNY; physics and computer science labs; and a state-of-the-art kitchen where health science majors and dieticians analyze food, develop healthy recipes, and test them out. Look up, and you'll see the sky bridge linking Gillet Hall, which is part of the College's historic campus, to Science Hall, which in many ways represents the College's future.

Fine Arts Building

The Fine Arts Building was built in 1961 and was among the first buildings in New York City designed by world-famous architect Marcel Breuer. It houses Lehman's Art Department, which has painting and sculpture studios for undergraduates and graduate students, and a digital media lab for 3D animation. The Fine Arts Building is also home to the Lehman College Art Gallery, which has been bringing dynamic contemporary art to the Bronx since 1984. Every year, thousands of art-lovers come through its doors to see its headline-making shows.

Shuster Hall

Facing the College Walk—and connected to the Fine Arts Building—you’ll see Shuster Hall, another Breuer-designed structure. Shuster is the Lehman's "nerve center." It's home to the College's administrative offices, and where admissions, academic advisement, and other student services are located. It's also where you go to pay your tuition, apply for financial aid, and find out about scholarships and grants that can help you advance your academic career.

College Walk

Here on the College Walk, you'll find a bust of our namesake, Herbert H. Lehman, a U.S. Senator, humanitarian, and four-time governor of New York State. Lehman was a fierce advocate for justice and democracy and fought for the rights of minorities, workers, women, and immigrants. That's why Lehman College is the ideal home for the Center for Human Rights and Peace Studies, whose mission honors Herbert H. Lehman's legacy. In fact, those ideals are in the College's DNA. After World War Two, the United Nations Security Council met here on campus, where it drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the time, news media described our campus as the diplomatic center of the universe.

Child Care Center

The Childcare Center is Lehman College's newest building. It opened in 2013 to provide childcare services for members of the college community. When you drop off your child at the Center, you can be sure they'll get the best care in a safe and supportive environment. They'll also learn about art, music, science, language, and math, and with a playground outside, they can run around and enjoy the fresh air.

Nursing Building

Nursing is one of Lehman's most popular—and highly ranked—programs, where students get hands-on training using the latest medical equipment and techniques. A new $75 million, 52,000 square-foot Nursing, Education, Research and Practice Center is currently under construction. Its state-of-the-art simulation labs will support the future of nursing education, including Lehman’s own doctoral program in nursing practice. With more than 160 hospitals within 30 miles of the College, Lehman-trained nurses find employment all over the region.

Carman Hall/IT Center

Carman Hall is home to Lehman's Humanities and Education departments, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and most of the College's classrooms. It's also where you'll find the Information Technology Center and the Lehman Multimedia Center—a multi-purpose teaching, learning, and production space that rivals professional facilities around the City. Students from our journalism, music, film, and art programs use its recording studio, television studio, and eight editing suites. Carman is also the home of BronxNet, an independent cable station that covers the Bronx. In fact, many of our journalism students get their start as BronxNet interns.

Student Life

On the south side of campus, you'll find the Student Life Building. It's a gathering place for student meetings and events, and home to Lehman's student clubs and campus organizations. The lounges and conference rooms, like all campus buildings, have free WiFi. On the lower level there’s a food pantry open to any student free of charge. And, if you’ve got a job interview lined up but nothing to wear, the career closet offers professional attire. There’s also a kitchen and game rooms where students can play pool or air hockey. It's the perfect place to relax between classes.

Davis Hall

Like Gillet Hall, Davis Hall also houses science departments. In Davis, faculty and students in our anthropology, biology, and chemistry departments research everything from ancient human origins to the latest developments in quantum chemistry. Davis Hall also houses the CUNY Institute of Health Equity, a University-wide center for public health research and policy development.

Named for Lehman College's first president, the four-story Leonard Lief Library has everything you'd want in a research library: In addition to books, periodicals, archives, and web-based resources, the library has pods for focused study, group study rooms, as well as open spaces for collaboration and two new teaching labs. The Library's knowledgeable staff is there to answer your questions, help you find an out-of-print book or track down research materials in a database. And if you can't find what you need on campus, you can borrow a book from any of the 31 libraries across the CUNY system and have it delivered to Lehman.

Old Gym

The neo-gothic Old Gym Building is home to several student support and program offices, including the Student Health Center, the Counseling Center, and the Instructional Support Services Program. The Health Center offers primary care services to all Lehman students, while the Counseling Center provides personal counseling and referrals to mental health resources. The Instructional Support Services program is staffed by trained peer tutors and content specialists. Whether it’s chemistry, history, statistics, or sociology, tutors and workshops can help you develop writing, research, and study skills in almost any subject. Online tutoring is also available.

The Lehman Performing Arts Center

The Lehman Performing Arts Center is the largest indoor entertainment venue in the borough. Critics have hailed its 2,300-seat concert hall as "acoustically perfect." Each season, the Center hosts more than 100 events curated to serve New York City’s diverse communities. From African gospel choirs, Russian ballet, and beloved Salsa stars to symphony orchestras, homegrown hip-hop, and performers like Janelle Monae, the Performing Arts Center features world class entertainment for everyone. It's little wonder that the venue is considered the Lincoln Center of the Bronx.

Bookstore

The Lehman College Bookstore, off the main pathway in the Old Gym Building, is the place to get official Lehman College gear, school supplies, art supplies—and books for your courses—including textbook rentals and e-books. It also sells computer accessories, personal items, and snacks. With over 2,400 square feet of space to browse, you're bound to find what you need. You can also shop and sell your used books on the store's website.

CUNY on the Concourse

A quick bus ride from campus brings you to CUNY on the Concourse, where Lehman extends educational opportunities to the community through Continuing and Professional Studies courses. In addition to classrooms, CUNY on the Concourse houses the Bronx Business and Technology Incubator, which supports tech freelancers and small businesses. It's also home to Lehman's Virtual Reality Training Academy and Development Lab, where students learn the skills they need to build virtual and augmented-reality applications. VR training isn't just useful for digital media and game creation—it can take careers to the next level in fields like education, engineering, broadcast media, and more.
