The Nanoprobe Group at Yale takes advantage of the microscopy lab on campus. This lab houses a low-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning probe microscope, a variable-temperature, variable magnetic field ultrahigh vacuum scanning force microscope, and a scanning force microscope. Dr. Udo Schwarz's team applies advanced atomic force microscopy-based techniques, which are continuously further developed in the lab, to quantify and map surface forces, interaction energies, and other parameters such as tunneling currents with high resolution. Current projects address problems in surface physics, catalysis, and nanotribology.
