About Us
Stony Brook Women's Rugby Football Club was founded over twenty years ago, by a group of women who welcomed the challenge of a new sport by the name of Rugby. Although the sport is much older than American Football, which is a derivative of rugby, the sport and the culture that comes with it is new to the USA, and thus many hurdles had to be over come.
The Women's Team, because of the lack of funding, started by playing in all black attire consisting of shirts and shorts, and thus over the years started to get recognition as "Black Widows". They eventually embraced the name as the Black Widows of Stony Brook. Over the years the team has experienced some great seasons and has had remarkable players. The team continues to be competitive, playing the smash mouth style and attitude on which the team was founded upon.
Currently the team has been recognized by the University as one of the most competitive sports teams on the Campus, while still being known as the Black Widows. They now compete in the Division 2 of the Metropolitan Rugby Union.
